The Guardian and Observer believe there should be a better representation of our diverse society in the media, and each summer we run a work-experience scheme for those considering a career in journalism. This year our London office is running a work shadowing scheme for BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) applicants interested in business and consumer journalism. The placements are unpaid although we will reimburse a daily lunch allowance and reasonable daily travel expenses. Successful applicants will spend two weeks on our busy
business desk, during July or August, shadowing our team of journalists and editors. You’ll learn how our award-winning newspapers and website are put together, and how we cover the biggest business, economics, finance and consumer stories across the globe. You will also have an experienced journalist as a mentor to offer careers advice.
Criteria To be considered for a placement you must be at least 18 years old, with the right to work or train in the UK, and be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in journalism – for example, serious involvement in student journalism, work experience on local/specialist media, or an impressive personal website or blog. The aim of this London-based scheme is to introduce aspiring journalists or those at the start of their careers to the Guardian and Observer's editorial environment. For this reason we regret that experienced professional journalists are not eligible to apply for these placements. Those who have received a previous placement at GNM are not eligible. For applicants who have no access to accommodation in London, the
Sarah Hughes Trust has kindly offered to provide a small number of grants. If you'd like to be considered for one of these, please add a note at the end of your covering letter.
Note: if, by the summer, there are new pandemic-related restrictions on office working, it may be necessary to modify or postpone this year’s scheme. Application instructions Please attach the following four things within
ONE Word document:
- A covering letter (no more than 150 words) explaining how you qualify for this diversity scheme, why you're applying, and what you hope to learn from your time with us
- Your current CV
- Examples of your work and/or links to online articles/blogs
- A 400-word article on a current business, finance, economics or consumer-related issue which you believe will be of interest to Guardian readers
Deadline for receipt of applications is midnight on Monday 27th March 2023. We're committed to providing adjustments for individuals with disabilities in the job application process. If you require an adjustment due to a disability, please email recruitment@theguardian.com. *Positive action is covered by section 158 of the Equality Act 2010

Development and training
One of the most common questions we are asked by applicants in interviews is "What kind of training and development opportunities will be available to me if I join the company?". The answer in short is a wide variety.
You'll begin with an induction. The first week or two will be spent getting to know the organisation. You'll meet a large selection of the people with whom you will work on a daily basis and be shown round all the relevant sites so you can get more of a feel for what's involved in producing two national newspapers, a website and serveral other award winning products.
It's also at this early stage that you'll attend any job specific training. This will come in the form of either formal training events - particularly true if you are working in our advertising sales function - or less formal one-to-one coaching with one of the more experienced members of your team.
In addition to the induction scheme, we run a number of internal training courses covering a range of key communication and business skills including assertiveness, project management, negotiation, influencing and management at all levels. More specialised courses are available from external providers.
We are committed to providing the most effective possible solutions to all learning and development needs. In the instances where training does not satisfy a specific need, we are equipped to provide bespoke individual coaching, team-building or psychometric assessment activities to help individuals and teams flourish.
