This position serves at the pleasure of the Superintendent of Washoe County School District.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Washoe County School District is seeking a Special Assistant to the Superintendent who will serve as a key staff advisor to the Superintendent. The Special Assistant to the Superintendent is charged with directing all facets of daily operations of the Superintendent's Office, with a particular emphasis on external communications and efficient coordination of staff.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Represents the Superintendent and is the liaison between the Superintendent's office and a variety of other internal and external offices. Works in a cooperative and collaborative manner with numerous internal and external constituents. Assists with developing, supporting, communicating, aligning, calibrating and maintaining the highest quality educational programs and services in the district. Performs all other duties and special projects assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.

Develops and continuously enhances strategies for effective communications regarding district policies, goals, objectives and program and service innovations to district staff and the general community. Provides communication counsel and support to the Superintendent to ensure the district's strategy, objectives, and performance are effectively communicated to external and internal audiences. A main responsibility of this function is drafting and reviewing internal and external correspondence for the Superintendent. Supervises the workflow of the Superintendent's office to ensure quality and timeliness including reports, position papers, correspondence, and related items.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

  • Master's degree in educational policy and administration or a related field or appropriate relevant experience, a law degree or related professional degree; Doctorate preferred, but not required.

AND

  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful relevant experience in education, a nonprofit or a government environment required.

OR

  • Experience leading overall administrative practices and procedures of a K-12 school division and general school administration. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Knowledge of: Considerable experience working with senior management in an organizational structure. Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, policy development and organizational restructuring and reforms. Proven ability to manage large, complex projects to successful completion. Demonstrated ability to handle difficult situations with confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy. Considerable knowledge of state, local, and school system regulations, policies, and procedures.

Skill at: Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to structure large amounts of information in written documents that are clear and easy to understand. Ability to supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff. Strong analytical and collaborative problem-solving skills.

WORK CONDITIONS

Performs senior executive level leadership in an office environment. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, and light lifting up to 10 pounds. The physical demands arerepresentative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year.

This position is a Leadership Team position and not subject to membership into a bargaining unit. This position is open for eligible transfer applicants and simultaneously open to ALL applicants.

The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
